Hygienist appointments
Annual visits to the hygienist could prevent you from getting tooth and gum disease
As you may already be aware, it is important to visit your dentist once a year to ensure your teeth and gums are as healthy as possible. However, you’re also recommended to see a hygienist regularly so that you can have your teeth professionally cleaned, further decreasing your chances of potential oral problems.
“Lots of people think that tooth decay is the main culprit for the loss of teeth, but that is not the case. Gum diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis are the main cause of tooth loss; they can also cause bad breath, pain and receding gums.”

The good news about gum disease is that it can be treated and better so, prevented. That’s why it’s so important to clean your teeth and gums thoroughly, and visit a hygienist regularly.
When you visit our hygienist at New Road Dental you can look forward to having your teeth and gums cleaned professionally; this is called a scale and polish. Unfortunately, no matter how well you clean your teeth at home, plaque will still find somewhere to build up. Left to develop, plaque will turn into tartar and eventually attract other bacteria which can cause potential problems.
As well as having your teeth expertly cleaned at our practice, our hygienist is also able to give you some great tips and advice about how to brush your teeth more effectively at home. They are also experienced in identifying early indications of issues such as gum disease and tooth decay.
In the majority of cases your dentist will recommend you to our hygienist. However, thanks to recent changes in dental law, you are now welcome to book an appointment with our hygienist without seeing your dentist first. You can book your Hygienist Appointment by clicking here.
